As I understand, Auto-RP is like an IGP and MSDP is like an EGP. Is this correct and can you use them together? Has anyone here done so?

Hi there doc,
There are some differences here. Auto-RP is a Cisco protocol that finds the RP in a Sparse mode multicast setup. MSDP is an open protocl and as you suggest is more suited to finding multicast sources in an egp scenareo. (http://www.ietf.org/html.charters/OLD/msdp-charter.html)
Yes you can use them together. MSDP can speak to a source running pim-sparse, which the Auto-RP could be running on.

I found out that the IETF has a April 2006 Draft that pretty much puts a cap in the head of Auto-RP in favor of Anycast-RP and MSDP, so that's the way we went.
