Hi,

1.DO we need to remember the frame format of all the versions of Ethernet & 802.3.

2 Which frame format do we use normall

Ethernet v2 OR 802.3 OR 802.3 with LLC OR 802.3 with SNAP...

3. Does it depends on the application being used that a particular format will be used..

Regards,

G

Standard IP uses Ethernet II.

802.3 is / was used with Novell IPX.

LLC is/was frequently usually used with traditional SNA over Ethernet.

SNAP is/was used mostly with Apple EtherTalk.

Regarding whether you "need" to know the frame formats, no, probably not. It's a good thing to know and/or keep handy for troubleshooting with a network analyzer ("Sniffer") and especially if you deal with old networks that may stillbe using legacy applications.

I believe you can still get a good protocol chart from www.packet-level.com :

Good Luck

Thx Scott,

that means normally we use Ethernet v 2 in present IP world.
