Halo Ciscoer,

I just bought a switch yesterday. They claimed that this is a "switch"! How do I know this is a switch and I do not buying a Hub. How to compare this is a switch and that is a hub.

I simply plug a stright cable and the windows show that I'm connected 100Mbps. How do I know my fast ethernet port is transferring at 100 Mbps. Is it true that the ethernet/fast-ethernet/giga-ethernet utilization are 40 %. What that made it?

Thank in Advanced

If you are getting 100 Mbps Full Duplex connection then you definitely have a switch.

Mostly switches are:

1. Manageable. Supporting VLANs, SNMP etc.

2. Have Ethernet Address of their own on each port

3. Send out BPDUs for STP.

Your catalog should say if it supports 802.1Q or 802.11.

Utilization at 40% could be in case of a shared hub. For switch expect 80% or better.

Thanks
