Interface Delay Command

joshua.ferguson

This may be an odd question, however I am working on performing some application performance testing and was thinking about using the router to add delay to the packets. I noticed under the interface config mode there is a delay option to increment in tens of microseconds. However other than the IOS command reference which is pretty vague I cannot find any documentation on this command. Does anybody know if this command does what I think it does?

Thanks,

Josh

Hello Josh,

the ´delay´ interface command is used to influence route selection in routing protocols like EIGRP, it does not actually delay the sending of traffic over an interface.

A way to accomplish what you want, which is to actually influence the transmission of data over the interface, is to use some sort of traffic shaping, such as Generic Traffic Shaping. You could set the traffic rate to a low value, then send a large amount of data, and the traffic would be queued at the interface, and thereby delayed...

Check this link for the details of GTS;

Configuring Generic Traffic Shaping
