I am planning an IOS upgrade on a 6509 with dual sup720's. Current version 12.2(17) going to 12.2 (18).I am certain I have read that this can be done without taking down the switch (upgrade the standby, failover than upgrade the new standby). However when looking for documentation on this proceedure anything I find requires a reload. Can anyone please point me to the proceedure for this upgrade?

Hi Chris,
This works well for sup2 :
Best way is to copy the image on the active sup first and then the standby sup.
Then configure the boot path on active sup
wr mem
Reloads the redundant supervisor engine and brings it back online (running the new version of the Cisco IOS software).
Conducts a manual switchover to the redundant supervisor engine. The redundant supervisor engine becomes the new active supervisor engine running the new Cisco IOS image. The modules are reloaded and the module software is downloaded from the new active supervisor engine.
The old active supervisor engine reboots with the new image and becomes the redundant supervisor engine.

NOTE: Configure RPR+ before performing this steps
