NAT, 678 and static IP's

I am setting up a 678 DSL router for a client for the first time. I expected to be able to set the internal and external IP address, turn on NAT and then configure the PAT entries, but it doesn't seem to work that way. I can't seem to be able to change the internal address without changing the external address.

Could someone please give me some direction as to how to handle this?

I've already looked through this. It simply says how to turn in off and on. I'm look for ways to configure my internal IP address without changing my external address. I'll take a look again and see what I may have missed.
