Is there any benefit gained by changing the default native vlan 1 to another vlan # when using 802.1q trunking? Pros or cons welcomed.

I would say there is no real benefit. The native vlan is where untagged frames are sent. It also serves for carrying spanning tree and vtp info.
You need to know what you are doing when you alter this setting. If not, you'd better use the defaults.
