NTP issue

Hi,

I want to setup an NTP-server in Windows2003. I already configured the service through the registry but it seems my routers and switches are not able to synchronise although they receive ntp-packets.

Does anyone have any experience with a 2003 NTP-server?

What I also find quite strange are the refid's in the debug-output??

I think that there are no full NTP implementations for the Windows platforms. Windows uses W32time which is actually a SNTP implementations which is not as robust and does not contain all the error checking and control of a full RFC compliant NTP server. You will not be able to get most routers to synch with a Windows based SNTP server. The only routers that can run SNTP

are the 800, 1000, 1600 and 1700. Most of the Catalyst switches also run SNTP and can synch to the Windows SNTP servers. In order to synch the routers, you can use the following source:: NTP public server on the internet.

Certain low-end Cisco devices only support SNTP. SNTP is a simplified, client-only version of NTP. SNTP can only receive the time from NTP servers and cannot be used to provide time services to other systems. SNTP typically provides time within 100 milliseconds of the accurate time. In addition, SNTP does not authenticate traffic, although you can configure extended access lists to provide some protection. An SNTP client is more vulnerable to misbehaving servers than an NTP client and should

only be used in situations where strong authentication is not required
