Packet fragmentation between L3 Switches

Hello Folks

I have a problema trying to pass packet bigger than 1518 between two L3 switches. I have an application that work with giant packets (2048bytes) by default, however once the packets pass the NIC of the server the packets can be fragmented. It work fine when I have normal routers but we recently open a new branch that is connected using fiber optic transceiver and a switch 3550 L3 for access. When I run an extended ping from 3550 to 4506 (Switch in the central) with the packet size setting to 1600 the ping do not answer. I have configured ip routing in both switches. What can I do to packet fragmentations?

Thanks in advanced.

Hi,

Can you set the 'sys mtu 1500' on the 3550 switch. 3550 switches support different MTU settings and I don't know what your's is set to. Most router interfaces' MTU default to 1500-bytes. Making the MTU setting consistent on the switch with other layer 3 devices in the network could avoid problems with fragmentation at various sizes.

Let us know if it helped.
