I am upgrading my core 6509s from sup1a/MSFC to sup720-b. I received the equipment today and the sup is in slot 5. I remember in the old days you need to something of this nature to take advantage of the enhanced switching fabric but I didn't think that was the case anymore. Does anyone know the best practice or have furhter details on this?

In old days , you had to have a switch fabric module ( SFM ) in slot 5 to increase backplane bandwidth capacity . With sup720 , thats integrated on the suoervisor and that is why you have to put the supervisors in slots where you used to put SFM. For 6506 and 6509 chassis , they are slot 5 and slot 6 ( for redundant sup ) , in 6513 chassi , you can use slot 7 or 8 .
Thanks

To add to above post, you can only use slot 5 or 6 for the primary and secondary supervisor on a 6509 and slots 7 or 8 for 6513. So you dont have another choice on the slot preference for the Sups.
