quick queston about clockrate and bandwidth

can someone clarify this, as far i haven't been able to get a firm answer.

clockrate sets the link speed, while bandwidth sets a metric calculation variable?

for the longest time i've been told bandwidth sets the linkspeed, but now i've been told otherwise.

the clarification would really help.

This is correct. The bandwidth command doesn't affect the rate at which packets are forwarded. It is only used by some routing protocols (EIGRP, OSPF, BGP) for the metric calculation.

Hope this helps,

Clockrate sets the linkspeed, but only if you are the DCE, i.e. if you have a DCE cable attached.

Bandwidth sets the metric calculation, and affects the load calculations, e.g. for load dialup etc. It does not affect the link speed.
