With 802.1d you are basicly limited to 7 hops if you follow ieee recommendations.

With the advent of RSTP 802.1w I can't find any discussions on why the distance limitations couldn't be relaxed, or any guidlines regarding tuning the max-age and other timers

Among all these parameters, the only ones which you can tune, depending on the network, are:

hello: from one to six

max age

forward delay

diameter: this will depend on the network
