RD and RT Values - VRF

Dear Experts, 

Here again and seeking help to understand RD and RT Values in VRF. 

This is clear that RD is used to avoid overlapping on IP address between multiple VRF customers.

RT is used to export and import VPN routes in VRF.

But would like to understand - On what basis and How to calculate RD and RT values . Referred few articles also but not clear.

There are 2/3 different ways people configure these values. Usually what I have seen in my limited experience is ASN:Number

Usually a VRF number. Something like - 

ip vrf 123
 rd 65001:123
