removing HSRP going to single router mode

We have a 6509 with HSRP configured and want set it to single router mode. What would be the steps for removing HSRP and going to single router mode.

To deactivate HSRP, step one would be to remove HSRP from the standby interfaces. The active machine will keep acting as the default router. If you do not want any disruptions, this is how you should leave it.

To clear HSRP up completely, you must also remove hsrp from the active interface and change the ip adress of that interface to the hsrp-adress. This will mean loss of connectivity while the virtual mac that's used for hsrp will be removed also when you disable hsrp processing on the interface.

Do you also want to do all routing in one chassis?

With HSRP you typically divide the active gateways between the two chassis. If this is the case for your situation, you must move all HSRP-active nodes to one machine by altering the standby priorities.

Remember that this may also involve changes to the spanning tree configuration.

I removed HSRP from the standby interfaces, but when I remove it from VLAN1 I loose connection and can't regain connection unless I restore the configs.

Hi Duane,

I think you must be running HSRP is single chassis only if I am not wrong which is also known as DRM(Dual Router Mode) where both the MSFC's can be active at a same time and now you want to move to SRM.

You can simple remove the standby groups from the msfc which is placed in standby sup first and then cane remove the standby groups from msfc which is in active sup and then imply the SRM commands.

The chassis is 6509 to 2 WS-F6K-MSFC2. I tried to remove HSRP but kept loosing connection to my second MSFC. when removing the HSRP configs on VLAN1. Which mean I'm still unable to set up SRM. Should completely remove HSRP before configuring SRM

Yes you have to completgely remove HSRP and then configure SRM

So how go about preventing a lose of connection with standby MSFC when I remove HSRP on VLAN1 which the last VLAN I am removing HSRP from.

Hi Duane,

If you remove config related to HSRP groups on standby MSFC the vlans which are active on that MSFC will start flowing their traffic from another MSFC which will be active for them now.

So it will loose a traffic for approx 10 seocnds and connection will resume again from active msfc but remember once you remove config from active msfc also to change the config to SRM then there will definetely be a downtime. So my recommendation is to arrage a downtime and then change the configs.
