Replacing a Shiva Terminal Server with Cisco Async port?

We have numerous old Shiva terminal Servers in use that are used to connect dumb terminals to an IP based hosts system, basically the TS is used to create a telnet session for each connected dumb terminal.

Can I configure a cisco async port (Aux for testing before purchasing a NM-8a) to do the same?

i.e I want to connect a dumb terminal to the AUX port ion order to bring up a telnet session to the remote node.

Sure; the simplist means would be with a simple "autocommand telnet x.x.x.x" command user the line; the dumb terminal would enter a CR (the activation character is configurable), and the telnet session would be automatically built. There are other commands under the line that can allow you to control access to the line, timeouts on the line, etc.
