RIP/Static Route

if i'm running rip on my host router, can I add a static route to another location?

Sure, no problem. You can mix 'n' match routing protocols (including static routing). But if you want the RIP to pick up that static route and redistribute it to other routers, you will have to tell it to do so.

HI russell

You can very well define static route at another end. But let me explain you.

If you are defining RIP on one end then you have to define RIP on remote end also to complete the process,

1) The packet generated at 1st end will go to remote router through RIP as there will not be other routing protocol or static route for this destination.

2) But when remote router will reverse the packet, if that router finds 2 routes for the source address one from RIP and another from static route then it will take static route, as administrative distance of static route is less.
