in a 3550, when I have several, say 3 or 4 seperate VLANs configured, can I have one seperate port assigned to be part of all the other VLANs, without the other VLANs be able to see each other?

I am not clear what you are trying to accomplish. If you could explain that more clearly we could perhaps give you a better answer.
If you define a port as a trunk, it will see (be a member of) all of the vlans but it will not allow a port in one vlan to see (or communicate with) a port in a different vlan.

For example I have engineering, sales, marketing assigned their own VLAN, and I want to have access to all 3 via an additional port on the switch, as you indicated a trunk port could do that. Can a regular switch port be assigned to be a member of more then 1 VLAN ?
