Sharing an internet connection

I apologize for not at all knowing what I am talking about, but I need some advice. My part-time network tech swears it is not possible to share an internet connection via a computer (without virus scanning sofware) plugged into the network without preventing viruses to attack the network.

Is this correct?

One more quick question. We have a website www.fbclubbock.org and we host our own email via an exchange email server. Our email server is name mail.fbclubbock.org. We've never had a problem until now because our host had to move our website behind a firewall so now we can not point our internal DNS to an ip nor a port on the firewall.

All that to ask: Should we change our stuff internally or should we figure out a way around the firewall?

in a way, your friend is right, there is a great chance that, when you share your Internet connection, you will get infected by a virus...obviously there are loads of antivirus programs available, some free, check e.g. AVG Free Anti-Virus at http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_dwnl_free.php

Regarding your second problem: which firewall is your host using ? I would have him check if SMTP and POP3 requests are blocked by the firewall for your Exchange Server.

Viruses can get in unless there is virus protection at the access points (like your email host, and your ISPs firewall). If they are scanning there, you should be okay. That said it's not a bad idea to scan internally also (and beware of floppies!).

You can't just get around the firewall. Get with you web host and work it out. Point to an IP on their firewall, and they need to add your DNS as a friendly (and paying) customer.

You may have to change a DNS setting. Call them.
