small, medium large buffers in Cisco routers

In one of my wan router I am seeing large number of packet drops in "large Bufers (size-5024 bytes). Almost all interfaces on this router uses a MTU of 1500. If none of the interface are going to receive a packet of more than 1500 bytes then why am i seeing this buffer drops?

I am not sure if understand correctly how a Cisco router uses various buffers (small, medium etc.) when it has to buffer packets. Is it use buffer based on packet size? Like if rotuer interface receives a packet of 610 bytes is it going to use medium buffer (size 600) or bug buffer (size 1536)?

Thanks

Check up configured MTU with show interface command. A nice paper about buffers is available at:

Hope this helps,
