I have a Cisco Catalyst 3500XL on my network. There are several Apple workstations connected here. There is also an Asante FriendlyNet GX4-800 GBIC switch connected to the Catalyst (to which there are connected more Apple machines). Late model machines on both switches are experiencing intermittant connectivity problems. What effect will turning off the spanning tree protocol have on the other switch? Is the use of portfast an option here?

Hi,

Disabling spanning-tree may cause a meltdown if there is redundancy. Enabling portfast may help only if there is a problem logging in upon "linkup." I suggest getting a trace on a troubled station to see why these stations are dropping off the network.
