stp and vtp pruning

What are the pros and cons to using stp when vtp pruning is in effect?

I had a problem with a trunk using FastEtherChannel. Due to a speed/duplex setting mismatch, it became a layer 2 loop, and caused a broadcast storm. Is this the type of thing that vtp should fix automatically?

STP would have provided protection agianst this scenario, right?

Hi,

strong recommendation:

Don't disable STP unless absolutely necessary.

It should protect you against most loop problems (99% I'd say, it fails only under very special circumstancies).

Don't forget: VTP prunning doesn't stop STP, it only stops user data broadcast transmitting when there is no port assigned to the VLAN on the remote switch.

If you want to stop also STP BPDUs on a trunk (you are sure there will never be any port assigned to the VLAN on the remote switch), it's better to disable the VLAN on the trunk, not only allow VTP prunning.

Regards,

Milan
