Switch port mapping

Situation - a 2950 48 port sw is fully utilised. However, it is believed that not all ports have a device connected at other end.

Does anyone know of an easy way to determine which ports have no device attached and those that have a device that is connected but switched off?

I have tried Solarwinds 'SwitchPort Mapper' - no joy.

I have reluctantly considered clearing the counters on each port and identifying those with no increase in traffic.

Is there a IOS command or program I could run on the sw?

Thanks in advance

Gary

Hello Gary,

that is exactly what I usually do, check if there is any traffic on the ports, and those without traffic are probably not used. Unless you have a large buffer for logging configured, where you could see the ports going up and down, traffic increase, or the lack of, is probably your best indication.

Regards,

Georg
