Switch Uplink feeds to VLAN

Hi,

I am using Catalyst 2900 XL switch . Is it possible that I can feed 3 VALNS from the same uplink port.

Let suppose I configure my faste 0/1 as an uplink port in order to feed the whole switch. Is it possible that this uplink port can feed data to different VLANS. If yes can I please know how to configure it, and how can I make my Voice traffic prioritize from other VLAN traffic, I want to make one vlan for voice and 2 for data.

Thanks,

Dennis Barnes.

Dennis,

Some 2900XL switches are capable of transporting multiple vlans over a single link. This is called trunking. Now, whether or not this can work in your configuration depends on the swich, operating system, type of connectors. This will also depend on the devices that you want to connect to the 2900. So, if you can provide the information above, I'm sure that any number of people on this forum could provide the correct configuration if it's available.

Thanks for the prompt reply, the switch I am using is Catalyst 2924 XL , ISO version 12.0(5)WC10, my first VLAN is going to be a voice VLAN on which I can hook IP phones, for the 2nd and 3 rd VLAN I am gona hook stations or PCs.

What other devices (if any) are you planning on connecting to this switch with multiple vlans?

Well for the time being just SIP based IP phones and eventually servers and few work stations. But I am still wondering is it possible to feed mutliple VLANS with a single uplink port, like my internet connection is terminated on one port and I want this internet data to be distributed on all the remaining ports which are part of different VLANS.

Please help me on this...

If I interpret what you're asking for correctly, you actually need a routing agent, not trunking capability. You are asking that information ingressed on one VLAN be forwarded or available on another VLAN. This would require a routing function.

100% correct , that's what I exactly want , so how can we do it through routing any suggestions.

You need to determine what source and destination traffic that you want to communicate, any special requirements, whether or not you have a router available and what type/interfaces/os is on it...We can go from there...

Well most of it has Voice traffic and internet or data traffic, I want my voice traffic to get prioritize over the data.

Router is Cisco 2651XM and IOS version is 12.3(1a), one of the fastethernet is avaliable for the future expensions and we can use that one.

Regarding prioritizing voice traffic, make sure your devices send out traffic with right CoS(Cisco AVVID systems use COS value 5). Catalyst 2900 XL and 3500 XL series switches do honor the incoming Class of Service (CoS) value in the dot1q tag. All the ports are considered trusted ports by default.
