switchport priority extend none

Hello,

can anybody explain what does the "none" option mean while configuring 802.1p on Cat3500XL?

The explanation "The switch is not instructed what to do with the priority." is confusing for me (see http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/c2900xl/29_35wc5/cli/clicmds.htm#xtocid137).

Hi,

It's the default setting. The port priority is not set, and the default value for untagged frames received on the port is zero.

The appliance connected to the port is not instructed (none) what to do with the priority.

(Read the 'Defaults' section of the command in the URL you pasted above).

But you are just repeating the sentence I've read already.

But what does it mean (English is not my native language)?

a) "The switch is not instructed what to do with the priority."

My understanding is that switch can either trust the priority received in the frame or ignore it (overwrite it with zero in this case). But why "not instructed" then?

b) "The appliance connected to the port is not instructed (none) what to do with the priority." How can the appliance be instructed? Via CDP? Or via another mechanism?
