transfert rate definition

i can't find the exactly definition of one switch's caracteristic , that is: transfert rate.

for exemple : for the catalyst 2950, we find that it has a backplane of 8,8Gbps

and a transfert rate of : 1,8Mpps (12 ports)

: 3,6Mpps (24 ports)

so can any one explain me the exact definition of this parameter

The transfer rates you mention are the forwarding rates. This is the aggregate bandwidth with which the switch can send at any given time via a combination of ports.
