For some reason i need to enable 1 port on a switch to use ISL to connect to a cisco router and port 2 as dot1q for non-cisco devices.. is it possible? If its possible, can i configure a 1900 to do it? please advise any other lower end switch.

On a product which support isl and dot1q, you can do it. i know 3500xl can do it. please refer to the product documenation.

Im going to test it out but 3500xl is already end-of-life :-(

Anyway, i just want to make it clear before recommending it to the management. If the switch can support both encapsulations and I set 1st port to ISL and 2nd port to dot1q, this would allow VLAN1 to communicate with VLAN2 via layer3 or router, right?

(assuming that both ends for every port is using the same trunking)...

thanks in advance

1. Trunking passes all vlan traffic for vlans assigned to the trunk. It will probably be routed as you suspect.

Hi!

Excuse me for not answering your question, but I see you have a Catalyst 1900 Switch I guess.

So I would like to ask you if you happend to know can the Catalyst 1900C be uprgaded from v5.35 to v9.00.04. Or this ver is limited to only succeeding ver of Catalyst 1912
