using both isl and dot1q in one switch

hi all,

just thinking on this ..

let say one switch have 2 uplink ports ..can we set one use isl and another use dot1q ...and connect to 2 different routers.

Sure, should be no problem so long as the switch ports and your routers support both. The trend is towards using 802.1Q only. I use both in my netwrok because I prefer 802.1Q on my 4000 access switches, but my older 5500 switches only support ISL. The trunk protocol is configured on a port-by-port basis. (Just make sure it's the same at both ends of each link ;-)

yeah ..that's what i think also.

i have one new distribution switch connected to existing switch ..the problem is core switch running isl to connect to distribution switch. the new switch can only connect to existing distribution switch ..however, new swith has been configured dot1q at main trunk. so i think i need to enable mapping dot1q to isl ...hope 2950 and 2948 can do this.
