Using TFTP to upgrade IOS

I am attempting to copy a new IOS image to a C6509-E with sup720. The image is 38.7 Mb (S72033....SXF4.bin). Is this too big for TFTP? I'm trying to copy to disk1: containing a formatted 128Mb CF card so there isn't any problem with space but the file never fully copies - just gets to about 36 Mb and starts over.

This sometimes depends on the TFTP server, I always have success with TFTPD32 when doing copy to the sup720. Also, make sure that you format the CF, and note that everytimeit fails, there are partial files in the CF and might silently filling up your CF.

If this is like the other devices that cisco uses lately that take CF you can use a PCMCIA adapter and directly copy the files from a PC. Of course that is a totaly non cisco supported method but I have yet to have it fail. If the PC can see the files when you insert the card the flash is in the proper format.

I have only done this on 2800 and 3800 routers and on the 7200 routers that will use ATA Disks. Even the CF in PCMCIA adapters work in 7200. Since the sup720 is very similar to a 7200 sup I suspect it will work.

You can always try it with a backup flash card and put the other one back if it doesn't work. Cisco of course does not officially support any of the cheap CF flash cards for cameras but that doesn't mean they don't work

sounds like file size limit with TFTP ..

might as well start using FTP to copy the image because you know these images' filesize is only going to get bigger..eventually TFTP won't be able to support it.
