Pruning is a feature used in VTP to limit VLANs on a trunk port.

http://www.cisco.com/warp/public/473/21.html#vtp_pruning

I understand VTP pruning will remove vlan's from trunks that do not need them.

How will this affect conversion time when a links fails, compared to no pruning ?

Strictly speaking, the pruned VLANs will not be removed from the trunks. (The downstream switches will happily run STP for pruned VLANs, for example).

All pruning does limit the flooding of traffic throughout the network: Flooded traffic will not be sent down a link where the VLAN has been pruned.
