What is MAC Address reduction?

HI,

I was wondering if someone can explain to me or point me to the the documentation regarding MAC address reduction.

I know that we need to enable this feature on a Catalyst switch for example to be able to configure extended-range VLANs. However I usually prefer to understand the full principle and consequences of a feature before enabling it on a live network.

So if some have any information I would be gratefull.

Thanx

Wassim

Hi Wassim,

To create extended-range VLANs, you must first enable MAC address reduction, which provides IDs for extended-range VLANs. Once you enable MAC address reduction, you cannot disable it as long as any extended-range VLANs exist.

Here's a link on MAC address reduction:

http://www.cisco.com/univercd/cc/td/doc/product/lan/cat6000/sft_6_1/configgd/spantree.htm#xtocid1621317

Hope this helps.
