802.1q configuration on a Cisco 831 router

I am trying to configure a Cisco 831 for intra-vlan routing using sub-interfaces and 802.1q. I am unable to do this as the subinterfaces of the 831 do not seem to support the encapsulation command.

Normally, I would use a Cisco 2621 to do this but am unable to for this particular site.

Is the Cisco 831 able to do this? Should I migrate to a 1760 or 2600router instead?

Hi Jeff,

I just did a quick check on Feature Navigator and it appears that you can't do this using the 831. It is definitely supported on the 1760 and 2600 routers.

You can do intervlan routing on a 1721 (for a minimum)

I have done interVLAN routing on a 1710 & 1712 before.

The new 877 also supports interVLAN routing, however it's done more as a switch configuration than the standard subinterface because of the built in 4 port switch. This retails very cheaply (here around £400 UK including wireless) and is I imagine a good replacement for what you've got.
