To be honest: playing with these values can bring you to a trouble:
I remember one failed CMS upgrade in the past - it copied a new image file to the switch flash but didn't change the BOOT variable. And the switch was not able to boot. So I had to change the BOOT variable manually.
But if you leave the BOOT variable empty the switch will boot with the first image file it finds on the flash (which is correct - the flash is not big enough for two image files anyway).
