yes it will, but for that you have to configure the preemp command on the both router or you can say on standby router...

Hello Carl,

Track option on HSRP is usually used to track on uplinks. And its used to decrement the priority on the router.

So if you have preempt and default priority (100) and you track serial interface , it will lower this router priority by 10 by default. So, stanby router will assume active state if it is set to priority 100 as well.

Vlad

so does this decrease the priority only when the router goes down ?

Hi Carl,

If the complete router goes down then there is no use for tracking at that point as there will be no hellos going from active to standby router and standby router will come up as active.

Only when the tracked interface goes down then there is a use for tracking command so that the HSRP copnfigured interface will come to know that tracked interface has gown down and will lower down the priority of the active router and standby will take the role of active router.

I will appreciate if you start rating the post to all who helps you out.

hi ankur and carl,

but its good to configure your both the route with the preemp command right ankur...there may be more chances to get interface down as compar to the whole router...

carl please rate all the help full posts...

Hi Devang,

It all depends on network setup and requirement but yes there is no problem to have preempt on both the routers. You can have it configured on both the routers even if you do not need in your situation.

Ankur

Yes, it will automatically switch over to other router, but for that you need to add " preemt command in config"
