Inside IP Changes when Power is shut off

Hello,

First off, what a great resource! Forgive me for my ignorance, as I am not very familiar with the Cisco PIX firewall. I have a new PIX 501 6.3 version. I have set the inside IP to a specific IP, whenever the power is shutoff, the inside IP changes to the factory IP of 192.168.1.1. None of my other configurations on the PIX change, only the inside IP. Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks,

MK

i assume you are doing a write mem when you set the new IP address?

if you are doing that then it could be 1 of 2 things, either you have set that interface to pickup an address from DHCP, or you have bad flash - which is unlikely..

if you want post your config - dont forget to remove all real IP's / passwords :)

Thank you for your reply. What steps I have taken are as follows: Enter the configuration menu, then I enter: ip address inside xxx.xxx.x.xxx 255.255.255.0. Then I press enter. That's all I am doing. Should I do it a different way? I have set both outside and inside to be static IP's. I will get a copy of the configuration and post it.

Thanks again,

MK

ahh so you are using PDM to manage it.

whilst i dont have anything against PDM I do recommend people get their hands dirty and console to the PIX todo config.

its fun ! trust me :)

i would say PDM might not be saving the config.

cheers

Thanks again for your reply. I used the PDM at the start of the configuration process. Once configured, I tested for a couple of days, then once I pulled the power I could not access the firewall. I then accessed the firewal via the serial cable and entered into the CLI and found out that the inside IP had changed to default. I changed back the IP using the CLI and tested and the same thing happened again. Strange that nothing else will go back to default, only the inside IP. So I kind of ruled out the flash because on one configuration aspect of the firewall defaulted. I don't have DHCP setup on the firewall, nor does the inside or outside ports look for DHCP. I will get the configuration over the weekend and post it as soon as I can. Maybe you can see something that I have missed. I am an amuatuer with this Cisco firewall.

Thanks,

MK
