Cisco press book Security Monitoring with Cisco Security Mars on page 68 sais that for MARS-110 appliance from total 1500GB, only 866GB is available for storage. Additionally same information can be found (although language is Hungarian, this part is readable :) on http://ciscoexpo.cisco.hu/eloadasok2007/Kadar_MARS_bev_tap_final.pdf
Is this true, and what is explanation why almost only half of total capacity is available for storage?

This is because of the space efficiency of RAID-10, have a look at:
