Good Day Guys,

Please what will be the consequence of disabling ip mask-reply from ser0/0 interface?

My network is getting slow time-to-time and I troubleshooted all devices (systems, i.e. dns servers, modem, etc) and they are all okay, but my ser0/0 interface to my gateway (cisco router 3640) is timing out must times and sometimes respong high like 1100ms or more which is making my network no to browse...

I was going through my cisco study material for CCNA which i came across this ip mask-reply to serial interface which i disabled by using this command no ip mask-reply. when i used it, i notice good respond from the interface which i can now browse and respond from the interface is low as 30ms to 300ms to my gateway (POP)...

Can anybody brief me more on the use of that command and its important please.

The ip mask-reply is used by Cisco IOS to respond to ICMP mask requests, it does so by sending ICMP mask reply messages. This is probably why you were seeing high latency on your network.

Check the following article:

Hope this helps

Jay

Also, forgot to add this URL which explains ip mask-reply command further:

Thanks for that tip sir...But will that make any effect to my network like improving my access to my gateway (POP) end and making me utilize my bandwidth much better by not responding to ICMP from attackers/hackers, etc that wanted to slow my network with ICMP as what is happening now in the world whereby hackers are using that means in making and slowing other peoples network?
