PAT and Portless Protocols

hello all,

Is my following understanding correct?

Port Address Translation (PAT) will work only for portocols that has ports (UDP, TCP) and will not work for portless protocols such as ICMP, EIGRP, OSPF, ESP etc. This applies to PIX and IOS as well.

But I see ICMP working fine across PAT. How is this possible? How does the PATting device map when there are multiple inside hosts pinging multiple outside hosts?

Can anyone throw more light on this.

Thanks in Advance,

Mohan
