Content Filtering on RV160W is not working

We decided to use RV160W to block certain websites during working hours. 

Settings were like this:

- Enable Content Filtering: Yes

- Block Matching URLs: Yes 

- Filter by Domain: facebook.com 

 

For the very first time, the filter worked as a charm and users weren't able to get into a blocked website. But after I turned off filter and client's browsers(we tried Chrome and Firefox) were able to load page, any subsequent attempts to enable the same filter did not prevent clients to use website. 

 

How to reproduce:

- enable filtering (with Schedule e.g. Always)

- try to access a blocked resource (expected behavior - no access)

- disable filter 

- access blocked resource (expected behavior - access granted)

- enable filter 

- try to access a blocked resource(expected behavior - access granted)

 

Firmware version: 1.0.01.01

Hello Chester,

 

We apologize for the inconvenience. Content filtering on RV160/260/340 is meant to track and filter HTTP traffic only. Web filtering (by Webroot) on Cisco RV26x and RV34x series does support HTTPS and requires a license. There is no current plan to include this functionality with RV160 series routers.

Thank you for prompt response. Very much appreciated. It is unfortunate for Cisco not to have plan to fix this issue. From support wise, I really appreciated your professionalism. From product wise, this is just another bad designed product under a name brand. As for me being your customer, your product no longer align to my best interest. And it is truly unfortunate since I am going to just return this model and switch to a different brand that makes product that make sense to me. Just a small suggestion, maybe have your product team start really listening to customers’ needs before you start loosing more customers. What worse is losing your loyal customers.

Hello Chester. No chance budy. I have been in this for couple of weeks with tech support and we negotiate solution. I got now RV260W and Im using webroot. But I have to say that although it generally do what I need it is ridiculously simplified and fetureless (for Cisco standard I was used to) and still next year I have to pay license for webroot again. Administration tools are "funny". For example if you want to setu schedule different for each day then you have to make schedule for each day. Also you have to target IP or IP range which is also pathetic. Then you have to make special policies for device groups and or give them all fixed IP. I have pc´s and mobile devices in the network which were all under DHCP. Thats now impossible, becuase I need to setup which device is and which isnt under the particular policy. Why the hell I cant add Mac adres I dont understand. Over all I spend good amount of time seting it up so it now do what I need, but it is pain in the rear end and still it is far from optimal and it give me some restrictions I hate. I have seen some stuff from Asus ot TP link which is less then half of the price and you can even control some of that with app on your phone. Dont ask why I want to setup what I want to setup. Also Im not an IT engineer and network manager. I own small busines and cant afford IT specialist so I have to do it myself. My understanding was that Cisco RV is product for me. And it was for some time. I have Cisco switches all over the place, but this router is big disapointment. I will keep it as long as it is running, but if something will not dramatically change in Cisco for RV products then this was last one - you can be sure about that. I expect Cisco RV to have 2x more features (as a price is 2x competition)  and to be able to setup everything and for free - not with licese.  Cisco cant get 2x more money for product with 1/2 of functions. I have to admit that support I got was flawless, but support cant fix bad product. Thats a fact. Have a nice day.

Yeah, got that loud and clear. Switch to other brand from now on.

The same here - it was the last Cisco device I purchased personally for the home needs and on behalf of businesses. 

Support is great, the community is really helpful, but all this not enough to justify weak products.

So finally I gave up. Im leaving Cisco right now. RW260W I got as a replacement for not working 160 (see above) is working, but it is for sale or going back to Cisco right now. Ihave enough really. That product is so beyond useless (for me) that it is ridiculous for Cisco standard. like seriously what the hell has happnen there? I hade previous generations until they brake (like for 7 years) and it was able to setup 5x more than this crap and was even lower range product for lower price... So Im going now for differnt brand Router and when other switches in the network break - I will not buy Cisco again. I WILL NOT SUPPORT THIS ANYMORE. And trust me I was all about Cisco in the past because I was used to have reliable product "setup and forget for many years" as a not IT specialist it was easy for me to setup. NOT ANY MORE. Bye
