Hello there,

A friend of mine has recently started a small business (gaming cafe). He currently uses two switches with 1 GB speed support and 1 home router from D-Link. He is facing major problems when it comes to connectivity or latency wise. He wants a stable connection to the internet since his entire business is dependant on it. The network has approximately 30 PCs the cafe never shuts down so there are customers playing online video games 24/7. What kind of router/model do you recommend for such setting?

Thanks for your replies in advance.

To ensure a stable and high-performance network for a gaming cafe with 30 PCs, you'll need to upgrade both the router and the network switches. Here are some recommendations:

1. Router:

  • Consider investing in a business-grade router that can handle the high traffic demands of a gaming cafe. A few reputable brands for business routers include Cisco, Ubiquiti, and MikroTik.

  • Look for a router with Gigabit Ethernet ports, as this will ensure that the local network can handle the high-speed connections between PCs.

  • Choose a router with Quality of Service (QoS) capabilities. This will allow you to prioritize gaming traffic over other types of internet usage, ensuring low latency for gamers.

  • Consider a router with load balancing features to distribute network traffic evenly across multiple WAN (internet) connections if needed.

  • Ensure the router has robust security features to protect the network from cyber threats, as gaming cafes are often targeted.

2. Network Switches:

  • Upgrade the network switches to Gigabit switches, as the existing 1 GB switches may be a bottleneck for high-speed internet access.

  • Look for managed switches that offer VLAN (Virtual LAN) support. VLANs can help isolate gaming traffic from other network traffic, improving performance and security.

3. Internet Connection:

  • Ensure that your friend's internet plan has sufficient bandwidth to accommodate the needs of the gaming cafe, especially during peak hours.

  • Consider having a backup internet connection in case the primary one fails. This can be especially important for business continuity.

4. Professional Installation:

  • It's recommended to hire a professional IT or networking technician to set up and configure the new router and switches properly. This will ensure optimal performance and security.

5. Regular Maintenance:

  • Regularly update the router's firmware and switch configurations to ensure the network remains stable and secure.

6. Customer Usage Policies:

  • Implement clear policies for customer internet usage, such as fair usage rules, and inform customers about them. This can help manage network congestion during peak times.

7. Network Monitoring:

  • Use network monitoring tools to keep an eye on network performance, bandwidth usage, and potential issues. This can help proactively address problems before they affect customers.

By following these recommendations and investing in the right equipment and maintenance, your friend should be able to provide a stable and low-latency internet connection for the gaming cafe, which is crucial for customer satisfaction and the success of the business.

To enhance your gaming cafe's connectivity, consider the Ubiquiti UniFi Dream Machine Pro paired with a Ubiquiti UniFi Switch 48 POE for top-notch performance and management. Alternatively, the Asus ROG Rapture GT-AX11000 offers excellent gaming optimizations. These upgrades are akin to unlocking all the furniture in Toca Boca's mod APK, providing a seamless and enhanced experience.
