RV042G Configuration - Setting up basic VPN

I am back again! You guys were really great the last time I had a question I hope this one is somewhat straight forward.

VPNs are something I don't typically mess with but we are going to start having remote users working from home. So what I need is a basic VPN that would connect the remote user to our system as if they were here at the office (assigning them an IP from our DHCP pool) so when they are online their external IP is the same as it would be in the office itself. The reason for that is many of our secure systems only allow access when the remote IP requesting that access is our office location. I would like VPN users who authenticate and login to act like they are at the office.

So my basic question is what is the setup required both on the RV042G and on the client PC to make this work?

Anybody able to help on this?

Hello Robert Prentice,

Thank you for using the Cisco Small Business forums. My name is Kevin, I am an eContent developer and I am part of the Small Business Support Community. It sounds like what you want is a Client to Gateway VPN for a group of clients. I have found this documentation on the Cisco Knowledge Base that may help you with your concerns. Set Up a Remote Access Tunnel (Client to Gateway) for VPN Clients on RV016, RV042, RV042G and RV082 VPN Routers. You would want to choose Group VPN when you Add a New Tunnel. In the remote client setup, you can add the IP from your DHCP pool.

I hope you will find this answer useful, and I hope you reply back with any questions or concerns.

Regards,

Kevin Yen

The support guide screenshots do not match what I see on mine and I have the same software version. You said put IP from the DHCP pool in the remote client setup but it asks for FQDN or User FQDN.

Robert,

Thanks for viewing the article and going through the steps. Can you confirm if you are doing a Tunnel VPN or a Group VPN? The option listed under the remote client changes depending on if you selected Tunnel or Group VPN.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Kevin Yen

Yes I did Group VPN and set that up but when I try to get the remote client to work, it wont connect. It asks for a username and password but when doing the Group VPN setup all it asked for was a shared key and either FQDN, User@FQDN or Windows XP/2000.

Sorry for the confusion, I wanted to clarify my question. Did you want to set up a Tunnel VPN or a Group VPN?

The Tunnel VPN is used if you are a single remote user trying to connect through a VPN tunnel.

The Group VPN is used if you have a group of users that are trying to connect through a VPN tunnel.

May I also ask what software you are using to connect to the VPN?
