RV130W - ShrewSoft VPN Client not working

Hi all,

just purchased a RV130W router and I'm trying to configure the VPN server to access to it trough internet with ShrewSoft VPN client, but I'm not able to do that. I have been testing different optons and guides that I have found for similar routers in this forums, but no luck.

Checking the logs on the router, I'm getting this message that I don't know if can be any hint...

#8: received MODECFG message when in state STATE_MAIN_R3, and we aren't xauth client

Thanks in advance.

Good Evening, imendiola1,

I will attach a guide on how to setup the RV130W with the Shrew VPN software. I hope it works for you.

Hello,

Thank you for the replying to both posts, it seems the issue on both VPN protocols is the same.

1- The router is forcing you to change the IP address of your LAN trying to prevent conflicts as the 192.168.1.X subnet is the most common one for most devices out there.

2- It's very likely that you are having the issue with the Shrewsoft software for the same issue.

The problem is that if your remote network is using the same subnet as the local network then the router is not capable of knowing when it is supposed to send a request to the LAN or the Remote end.

My recommendation is to change the subnet on either side (preferably on the router's end) so that you can configure the PPTP VPN and maybe that will also resolve your issue with the Shrewsoft VPN.

Please let us know.

Hello,

Out of curiosity, is there a reason you are not using the built in PPTP server for the connection?

I only asks because it is easier to configure and it is compatible with Windows, MAC, iOS, Android, Linux, etc.

Hi cchamorr,

I was trying both VPNs, but the PPTP was asking me to change the address scheme of the router:

"In order to ensure proper functionality, the router will need to change its IP address to 10.x.x.1 to avoid conflicts with the remote network. You will need to reboot all PCs and network devices connected to the router. If you have set static IP addresses on any device or if you are using port forwarding, you will need to update its IP address to the new IP range to operate properly. Would you like to continue?"

So jkust to avoid reconfiguring all the devices with static IP addresses, I just wanted to give a try to IPSec VPN...

Regards

Hi,

finally I have changed the IP address schema to 10.x.x.x and now I have working VPN with IPSec and also with PPTP. It took me a while to change all the static IP addresses but now is more difficult to have conflicts with other networks when connecting from outside.

Any way, thanks a lot to both, stamador and cchamorr, for your support on this!

Hi stamador,

I saw this tutorial in a previous post and I was quite sure that I followed it also...

but anyway, I have repeated the steps on the tutorial, and now the tunnel seems to be working. At least Shrewsoft VPN Client says that the tunnel is enabled. But I am not able to reach any of the hosts that are located in the internal network... Could this be happening  because I have the same addresses in the internal network and the external one from which I am trying to connect? (Both are 192.168.1.0/255.255.255.0 networks)

Regards

Hi, imendiola1,

It looks like that is the reason your not able to reach host in the other side.  The only option ( that I don't recommend) but you can try is the following scheme in your DHCP settings:

Remote Site:

192.168.1.1  Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.240   Starting IP address:  192.168.1.1

                                                                          Ending IP address:   192.168.1.14

Local Site:

192.168.1.130  Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.128   Starting IP address:  192.168.1.131

                                                                              Ending IP address:    192.168.1.150

You can adjust the IP scheme depending on your number of clients on either side.  I have tested those settings on a RV180W and they work; it should be the same for a RV130W

Hello, I've tried remote-side IP gateway settings of 10.10.10.0 and 192.168.220.0 but cannot see any connected devices (although Shrewsoft suggests the tunnel is active).  Do you have any suggestions for me regarding IP's that I select on the remote (router) side?
