RV325 DHCP Class configuration on clients causing DHCP to fail

Hello all,

Has anyone else found an issue with DHCP Class configurations on DHCP clients causing the clients to fail to receive an IP address from the RV325? I know this sounds obvious but there is no apparent way to configure DHCP Classes on the RV325 so if you're unlucky enough to be forced to use a computer with as DHCP Class configured, you might be in trouble.

After many months of head banging trying to get my company supplied (and managed/locked down) work laptop to connect to my home network, I have just discovered that my employer attaches a DHCP Class to the interfaces in Windows which stops DHCP on the RV325 from issuing an IP to those network connections. Luckily for me, I temporarily have local administrator access on my computer to remove the class information which has fixed the problem for the short term however who knows how long it will last for before the class information reappears or has to be added back when my laptop does not behave correctly on the corporate network.

Has anyone come across a way to configure DHCP Class information in the RV325 so I can correctly work around the problem in the DHCP server? I have not found any way to configure classes through the RV325 UI.

Unfortunately I do not have a support contract being a personal user so can't raise a service request or product type suggestion to see if anything can be done in a future firmware release.

Best regards,

Scott

Hi,

I am aslo facing the same but unfotunately i am not able to modify my DHCP class id settings, its giving me error;

" The operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation"

Is there any way to do it from registry of GPedit may be?

Waseem,

It's possible to edit or remove the DHCP class in the windows registry if you have enough access. I assume if you're talking about being able to use GPEedit then maybe you also have enough permissions to use Regedit. I tried using the ipconfig /setclassid method which kept failing with the same error you posted, in the end I renamed the registry keys on the interface to remove the DHCP Class but I have no idea how permanent it will be before my employer reapplies it.

The two keys are DHCPClassId and DHCPClassBin on the network interface, unfortunately I can't remember the exact path but it's something similar to this: (you could also probably do a Find on the keys)

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\<ID of interface>

The ID number will vary depending on your interfaces but you'll see ones that have a DHCPClassId (and DHCPClassBin) key which should match whatever you see in ipconfig, I renamed the keys to DHCPClassId.disabled and DHCPClassBin.disabled but don't forget to make a registry backup first just in case something goes wrong.

The RV325 has the only DHCP server implementation I've ever come across in a Home or SMB type router that is completely undone by arbitrary DHCP Classes without giving you any way to configure them. Most other SMB routers will simply ignore DHCP Classes from hosts if they don't allow any configuration of it (we won't let you configure it but we're still going to honour client (mis)configurations). Unfortunately the RV325 is fundamentally broken in this regard.

Hope that helps.
