RVS4000 - FTP File Listing Failing

I am trying to determine why this router would cut off the connection to an FTP server when trying to generate an ascii listing of all the files. in the current directory.

RVS4000 4-Port Gigabit Security Router with VPN  version V01
Firmware Version: V1.3.2.0

And I have tried it also with a
Firmware Version: V2.0.0.3
Version 02 version of the same model RVS4000 router

I know that this is Router specific because I have been able to isolate the issue with just this router.
My other routers did not show this behavior.

When connecting to an FTP site or doing a refresh of the current directory the FTP it will list a portion of the files then return an error stating

"Could not get file list because connection was reset by the file server"

I have however eliminated the file server as the issue because it is only this router that has an issue communicating.

I saw this behavior with both Fetch and with Dreamweaver.

I even turned on and off passive mode to see if that would help.  But no help there.

I have turned off and on settings. in Firewall -> Basic Settings
but to no help.

THere are many more files in the folder starting with letters higher than "i".
But this router cuts off the connection before it will list them.

What rule or modification to the router do I need to perform to fix this issue?

Hi Kevin,

Thanks for posting. This is an unusual issue you have and sounds like maybe a packet fragmentation problem. What type of internet connection do you have? Is the MTU in the router set to Auto?

I was on phone with Cisco all day.  And they are going to escalate the issue.

I saw the same response from my windows machine when I used FTP:// instead of HTTP:// in firefox.

It listed a few files then as it tried to load the rest the page (file list) it changed to an error page staing that

"The Connection was Reset"

"The Connection to the server was reset while the page was loading"

It did not matter if I FTP'ed to a Mac server or a Win server.

You are correct to suspect the connection

We are on a satellite for Hughes.

I am suspecing that this router is impatient and is not waiting long enough for the handshake.

But we can not find the setting that we can change to help this.

MTU is on Auto though.

Do you think if I set it to a value it might help?

I hope that this insident will result in a fix (settings change) or new firmware,

or at the very least cisco testing thier equipment on connections with a high latency.

Any recommendations as what I should replace this router with?

Kevin,

I would certainly check the MTU, especially with satellite. I just responded to another question and explained how to check the MTU and adjust it in your router:

https://supportforums.cisco.com/message/3318881#3318881

Tried as you described to set the MTU.

Tested as you described

Went down as low as 1024 before it would stop giving me

Request Timed Out.

Reset the router using Manual MTU at 1024

But the FTP issue still remained.

THanks for the info but it seems to have not fixed the FTP file listing issue with our satellite connection latency.

Kevin
