IP Conflicts

I have an issue where Meraki is alerting to an IP conflict. The odd thing is that it is not between 2 different clients, it's just one client with an IP address conflicting with itself. Has anyone encountered anything similar? Thanks in advance.

Have you checked if random MAC is enabled on the machine?

I am not a Cisco employee. My suggestions are based on documentation of Meraki best practices and day-to-day experience.

I have seen this when devices, in particular APs, are booting up. When are you seeing this message?

Hi @sflitcraft ,

Is that client connected to wired network or wireless network?

Is it a tablet or a laptop?

Do you have a DHCP fixed IP assignment?

The reason is ask is I saw some devices sharing the same mac address on their wifi and ethernet cards. So if the SSID this device is connecting is associated with the same VLAN present on wired connection, it's possible DHCP assigns the same IP.

And also @CMR has a good point.

Thank you for the replies. I have not had anyone come to me with error messages, I'm just getting email notifications about the conflicts. We are a school where it's BYOD, and they are connecting to our Guest network. They are all wireless clients using both laptops and phones. None of the clients has a fixed IP address.

Ok. Thanks for clarifying.

If your Guest network has Meraki DHCP (NAT mode) , then the Access Point will offer 10.x.y.z IP to wifi clients.

If you have a large number of clients in and out everyday, you may have duplicated IP every now and then.

In addition, sometimes a user might add the leased IP statically to his/her device.

Thank you. That makes sense. We are not getting alerts all day long, just a few now and then.

I have had this issue with Apple devices. I think it has to do with the Private Wi-Fi Address feature. This has only become an issue with Meraki in the last 1-2 updates.
