Dear All,

I m having problem downloading the image to my router 2811. The problem which i m facing is that, when i follow the cisco documentation for downloading the image through xmodem everything works fine even the hyper terminal shows that the packets are being transfered. But everytime in the end it gives me this error:

advsecurityk9-mz.124-11.XJ4.bin ...

CCCCprogram load complete, entry point: 0x8000f000, size: 0xcb80

Format: All system sectors written. OK...

Formatting failure! Error code: -72

rommon 2 > en

and again is comes in rommon mode. And according to the documentaion it should come in this mode:

Router>

Please guide me this regard.

Regards,

Mukarram.

Hello Mukarram,

use the following as a reference

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/access/1800/1841/software/configuration/guide/b_image.html#wp1063658

Because you are in rommonitor you can try the following:

1)

use dir flash:

to verify if the IOS image is written on the flash

check the dimension in bytes with that declared in cisco site.

If the file is present and the size in bytes is correct try the following

2)

confreg 0x2102

then

boot flash:image_name

and see if it is able to load the ios image.

If you see an empty flash or the size of ios image is wrong stop at step1.

Have you verified the size of free space on the flash ?

you may need to erase the flash if you made some attempts to load the new image

I would suggest to post the output of

dir flash:

from rommonitor prompt

Hope to help

Giuseppe

Dear Giuseppe,

Thanks for your reply. Below is the output from dir flash: command.

I think my flash card is corrupted.

rommon 1 > dir flash:

program load complete, entry point: 0x8000f000, size: 0xcb80

open(): Open Error = -66

dir: cannot open device "flash:"

Any suggestions from your side will highly be commendable.

Regards,

Mukarram.

Hello Mukarram,

I was afraid the case was this.

However, we should be speaking of the external flash because the internal boot flash is too small to host a a full IOS image

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/access/2800/hardware/installation/guide/01_hw.html#wp1037629

table 3

2811 Internal 2-MB flash memory

see for checking the Compact flash status

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/routers/access/2800/hardware/installation/guide/11_hw.html

Verify if it is correctly inserted and also if it has any writing protection lock.

if you have a memory reader on your pc or a USB memory reader you could try to format it on a pc.

Then insert it again on the router and repeat the whole procedure to download IOS including erasing the flash.

the flash should be formatted on the router itself using a PC is just to check the flash.

Hope to help

Giuseppe

How can you format your compact flash or usb on your pc so cisco router can read it?
