internal flash volume appears to have failed which i'm assuming cannot be fixed but if you have a suggestion there I'd like to hear it. I've moved on to trying usb flash disk for boot which works fine when commands are issued manually from rommon but if the router loses power or is reloaded, boot file listed in the config is not found and it drops back to rommon. rommon takes a couple dir commands to get it to display the usbflash0: contents and it also doesn't see the device until the dir commands are issued which might be related. 8GB pny usb disk partitioned down to multiple partitions with the first being 256MB FAT16 using BootICE in windows. Any ideas?

Looks like the router is dead and needs to be RMA-ed.

it's online and routing, but is in a state where I will have to go through manual rommon usb boot again over console cable if power is ever interrupted. we'll have to replace it at some point but I'm trying to keep it consistent until then.

boot system usbflash0:0:c880data-universalk9-mz.151-4.M.bin
Take this line off. The syntax is incorrect.
boot system usbflash0:c880data-universalk9-mz.151-4.M.bin
Can you change this to "boot system flash usbflash0:c880data-universalk9-mz.151-4.M.bin"?
Also is there a USB flash "permanently" attached to the router?
11-10-2015 03:01 PM
the 0:0 was just another attempt since it also shows up that way in sh file system. the usb stick will be permanently attached if needed.
getting same result with boot line modified:
router#sh run | inc boot
boot-start-marker
boot system flash usbflash0:c880data-universalk9-mz.151-4.M.bin
boot system rom
boot-end-marker
router#reload
Proceed with reload? [confirm]

then ios loads and the router comes online, it seems like it cant get to the usb ios image until after the dir usbflash0: command is issued.

boot system rom
Please remove this too.

boot lines are attempted sequentially top to bottom until one works or it just drops to rommon, correct? will removing this line have any effect on the problem?
11-11-2015 01:53 PM
It will depend on the first statement. How do one know the first statement is valid and the router ain't booting into ROMmon because of faulty first and second boot variable statement?
11-12-2015 07:13 AM
this router goes to rommon when there is no boot statement in the config due to internal flash failure which is what lead to attempt booting from usbflash boot statement. what i'm not understanding is why same option works for ios images on flash: in other routers, seems to be a usbflash quirk.
