887VA keeps losing VDSL/router firmware after reload

Very odd one this. Basically, my 887VA doesn't seem to load the VDSL0 modem firmware either after a warm reload, or indeed when its 'warm'- by that I mean, not left for several hours. Here's 'normal'- from cold. homegateway001#sh controllers vdSL 0 Controller VDSL 0 is DOWN Daemon Status: Establishing Link XTU-R (DS) XTU-C (US) Chip Vendor ID: 'BDCM' ' ' Chip Vendor Specific: 0x0000 0x0000 Chip Vendor Country: 0xB500 0x0000 Modem Vendor ID: 'CSCO' ' ' Modem Vendor Specific: 0x4602 0x0000 Modem Vendor Country: 0xB500 0x0000 Serial Number Near: FCZ1729C4NZ 887VA-K9 15.1(4)M Serial Number Far: Modem Version Near: 15.1(4)M Modem Version Far: Modem Status: Idle DSL Config Mode: AUTO Trained Mode: TC Mode: UNKNOWN Selftest Result: 0x00 DELT configuration: disabled DELT state: not running Trellis: OFF OFF Full inits: 0 Failed full inits: 0 Short inits: 0 Failed short inits: 0 Firmware Source File Name (version) -------- ------ ------------------- VDSL embedded VDSL_LINUX_DEV_01212008 (1) Modem FW Version: 110506_1916-4.02L.03.A2pv6C032b.d23i Modem PHY Version: A2pv6C032b.d23i Training Log : Stopped Training Log Filename : flash:vdsllog.bin Which is all good. Here's what it says from a reload, or from non-cold. homegateway001#sh controllers vdSL 0 Controller VDSL 0 is DOWN Daemon Status: Firmware Download DSL modem is not yet initialized. Firmware Source File Name (version) -------- ------ ------------------- OS FW embedded VDSL_LINUX_DEV_01212008 (1) Training Log : Stopped Training Log Filename : flash:vdsllog.bin Odd eh? Any ideas, anyone? thanks

Hello,

odd indeed. I think you have to rename the file to a .bin extension in order for it to be recognized by the router after a reboot.

What if you manually load the file from flash:

controller vdsl 0 firmware flash:

Thanks Georg.

Yes, its pretty strange. It has me pretty puzzled!

So, a "dir flash" shows no separate firmware file:

Directory of flash:/

    1  -rw-    32432524   Mar 1 1984 00:01:00 +00:00  c880data-universalk9-mz.151-4.M5.bin

    2  -rw-         780  Aug 17 2017 10:02:54 +00:00  vlan.dat

    5  -rw-        2622  Aug 17 2017 18:29:48 +00:00  startup.txt

Thats just after a 'warm' reload. The controller was up and the firmware loaded prior to reboot.

Daemon Status: Firmware Download

DSL modem is not yet initialized.

Firmware Source File Name (version)

-------- ------ -------------------

OS FW embedded   VDSL_LINUX_DEV_01212008 (1)

I'm thinking I might need to get the separate (not OS FW) firmware file, tftp it in, and then do as you suggest.

Hello,

what is the exact 887 model you have ? 887VA,887VA-M, 887VA-CUBE, 887VA-W, e.g. ?

Its an 887VA, Georg.

Hello,

I assume you have a service contract to download the latest firmware release...

Be sure to follow the procedure below to upgrade the firmware:

https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/td/docs/routers/access/800/firmware/release/notes/VDSL2/fwrnd23b.html#pgfId-48969

Odd indeed that the file just disappears...

Hi, I have the similar problem on a C887VAM router,

***

Router#show controller vdsl 0

Controller VDSL 0 is DOWN

Daemon Status: Start

DSL modem is not yet initialized.

Firmware Source File Name (version)
-------- ------ -------------------
OS FW embedded VDSL_LINUX_DEV_01212008 (1)

Training Log : Stopped
Training Log Filename : flash:vdsllog.bin

***

the firmware you have on your router.
you have solved with the VDSL controller firmware.
Thank you
