Adding a HWIC 1FE card to 2811 Router

Hi,

I am new to Cisco and appreciate if i could get some answers for the above.

I have a 2811 router runnning IOS 12.4(21) and have added an HWIC 1FE card to slot 2. But the card doesnot show up in the router and all the three lights on the HWIC card is steady green. I have gone through some cisco documentation and found that i have to upgrade the IOS.

I have few questions before doing the upgrade.

1. Which IOS version should I upgrade to?

2. Will this erase my exisitng running configuration ? I have VPN services, PPPoATM,  PBR  etc.. all running on this router at present.

3. Presently i have a 128 MB CF card on the router. Will this be enough or do i need to upgrade this card also? Can i choose an IOS which will fit into this card otherwise while keeping all existng features?

4. I want to use the HWIC card for the ISP's internet service through PPPoE. Will this be possible with the upgraded IOS ?

Thanks.

Abraham

Hi,

1. Which IOS version should I upgrade to?

    A:  12.4(20)T or later

Note: Another document says 12.4(24)T.  I'm sometime confused with cisco documents.

2. Will this erase my  exisitng running configuration ? I have VPN services, PPPoATM,  PBR   etc.. all running on this router at present.

A: No, the existing configuraion would be fine. Just save it before turn it off.

3. Presently i have a  128 MB CF card on the router. Will this be enough or do i need to  upgrade this card also? Can i choose an IOS which will fit into this  card otherwise while keeping all existng features?

A: Just upgrade from the IOS feature set you're using. Let's say IPService. Just download a new IPService 12.4(20)T or later. You will be fine with features you're using. As long as you have enough space to load a new IOS you will be fine.

4. I want to use the HWIC card for the ISP's internet service through PPPoE. Will this be possible with the upgraded IOS ?

A: The document says "Additional Feature: Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet (PPPoE) client".

Are you going to use ADSL? If so, you can go for Broadband Modules.
