Cisco 6500 requiring boot command from ROMMON

enelson11
Level 1
Level 1

I have a customer that has a 6500 series chassis that whenever it reboots requires the boot command from ROMMON to load the IOS. The confreg was set to boot from ios list (think it's x2102, will check after customer gets back to me). I'm lacking information until the switch comes up, but I was wondering if anyone has ran into this issue before with confreg set properly and it still not loading IOS.

More information.

This is the output from when it attempts to boot. Possible bad IOS code?

System Bootstrap, Version 12.2(17r)SX7, RELEASE SOFTWARE (fc1) Technical Support: http://www.cisco.com/techsupport Copyright (c) 2009 by cisco Systems, Inc.

Eric,

Can I ask if you can post the output to the command "sh bootvar"? Your issue is very common and this is mostly caused by an incorrect boot variable statement.

Also post the command "dir sup-bootflash:".

Sent from Cisco Technical Support Nintendo App

I'll check that when I get back to it. I can't get into enable mode and running sh bootvar would not work under ROMMON. I'll run the command "dir sup-bootflash:"

Another thing that has me worried is I can't access the disk0: in ROMMON. I issue "dir disk0:" and it gives me the bad magic number error even though the only thing on the card is back up data. I was going to attempt to put a new IOS on the card and boot from that, but no dice with the bad magic number.

Something else is that there are 3 total IOS codes on the bootflash: directory. Each one gives me the same error that I posted in my last quoted post.

I spoke with TAC and the guy I spoke with went straight into wanting to RMA the SUP 720 after resetting the confreg forced me into the IOS codes.

Does this help with any ideas?

Eric,

Type rommon>dev     to verify the available memory.

1- Try to boot the image from bootflash or just type boot. If you get similar error please follow step 2
2- Do you have by any chance a spare sup to format the disk0? After formatting the disk0 (switch#format disk0) we can download a new image from a tftp server (switch#copy tftp: disk0:)
3- Try to recover the affected sup with the new code.

We can be thinking of a hardware issue with the card if: reloading the switch does not fix the issue, if we have the same results after formatting the disk0, already tried to boot the image from the RP.

Haihua

After running the hex error code that came from the crash file with TAC, it turns out that it was a hardware fault with the mainboard. I formatted the disk0: on my computer to the specs required (had to go through that in the past). I'm getting the thing RMA'd.

What would have fixed it would be to put in new code with the disk0: (since Xmodem does not work on this sup720), and boot to that. Also making sure that the confreg is set properly. After trying each possible confreg setting, the TAC people ran the hex code and came out with some kind of mainboard error.

Booting from RP/SP gives the same results. There are 3 codes on the sup720 from previous upgrades and each one had the same issue. Even after reformatting the disk0: it would throw the bad magic number error. I'm going to test the card tomorrow or the next day to ensure that the card is ok.

Eric,

Can we verify if the SP has the same boot variable?
This is because when we reload the 6500 at this point because we lost the power
to the switch, we can end up in switch processor (SP) ROMmon because the
configurations register value for the SP can still be 0x0. Issue the remote
command switch show bootvar command in order to verify this statement

Switch#remote command switch show boot

Verify if the config-register is 0x2102 or that has the correct image. If
is different the config-register try setting it again on the RP and then
save the config and rerun the 'remote command switch show bootvar' command.
If it shows 0x2102 at next reload then it should fix it.
