Difference between CAR and Policing?

Could someone please remind me of the difference between these two mechanisms and how I would be able to determine which I had to configure ?

CAR is the policing function that was originally implemened in IOS. With the advent of class-based policing, you have much greater flexibility in defining the traffic you want policed.

I would only use CAR if I were using an older IOS version that did not support class-based policing (CB policing). IF you have a choice, go for CB policing.
